Lichting 2010 is a project of Amsterdam International Fashion Week, HTNK Fashion Recruitment & Consultancy and Premsela - Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion in collaboration with G-Star Raw, and the Utrecht School of the Arts, AMFI Amsterdam Fashion Institute, ArtEZ Institute of the Arts Arnhem, the Royal Academy of Art, Zuyd University, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Willem de Kooning Academy.

The designers who show at Lichting 2010 are chosen by senior lecturers at their respective academies:

AMFI Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Amsterdam

Participants: Merel de Jong and Floor Kolen

'I've chosen Merel and Floor because they express an emotion that fashion should express at this moment in time; it's not about hiding or safety, not about a target group or wearability, it's about feeling, about dreaming, about using clothing and the body to express your deepest emotions and most sincere view on humanity and evolution.'

Peter Leferink, principal Fashion Design Lecturer AMFI about Lichting: “The Lichting platform shows that young Dutch fashion designers have international ambitions & capacities. Once again, I am proud to have my students on the Lichting catwalk.”

ArtEZ, Academy of Visual Arts, Arnhem

Participants: Bianca Herranz van Roeden and Lotte van Schijndel

'This year, the Fashion Department of ArtEZ Institute of the Arts Arnhem is represented by Bianca Herranz van Roeden and Lotte van Schijndel. Both highly talented fashion designers who are able to combine personal concepts, a strong sense for fashion, craftsmanship, perseverance and discipline, and fitting within the Arnhem Tradition.'

Matthijs Boelee, course director Fashion ArtEZ Institute of the Arts about Lichting: “Lichting offers an excellent platform for young recently graduated fashion designers to show their collections to a broader public and -in spite of the element of a contest- an opportunity for Dutch fashion academies to profile themselves.”

Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam

Participants: Marije Hellwich and Tony Marcus Sacharias

'Tony Marcus Sacharias: An authentic fashion proposal of great sensitivity. An investigation of the relation between the original, the perfect and the imperfect.
Marije Hellwich: Research into human fetishisms triggered a daring design process. Message delivered sometimes adding one stitch only! A powerful, both intelligent and humoristic fashion statement.'

Anne-Grethe Filtenborg, Head of Fashion Design, The Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam about Lichting: “The Netherlands, being a small nation yet rich in terms of design tradition is well served by a platform such as Lichting, where ‘the best of’ our academies’ fashion graduates get the opportunity to present their work to a professional audience. We welcome the increasing international character of this venue.”

Royal Academy of Art, The Hague

Participants: Marije de Haan and Janneke Lemmers

'Janneke Lemmers is on a continuous quest for interesting design angles. This attitude combined with her bright personality and her remarkable professional approach results in a particular own style and image. In her graduate collection, Janneke started with a doom scenario but proved the end of the world is still far away.
Marije de Haan is a master in translating spheres and images into a collection of garments with an eye for detail, form and fabric range. Marije’s fascination for crime scène photography inspired her and helped her transform static scenes into a very lively and mysterious image.'

Erik Verdonck, Head Dept. Textile and Fashion, Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague about Lichting: “This is only the beginning!!!”

Utrecht School of the Arts, Utrecht

Participants: Mariko Ferrier and Matthias Louwen

'Mariko Ferrier and Matthias Louwen represent both ends of the bow of profile-possibilities that match our perception of designing fashion collections. Matthias’s clean-cut “alien” approach and Mariko’s “deteriorating” vision are clear opposites in every way. Are Mariko’s models - doll-faced, though erratic in expression - raging puppets or amazon-warriors? Beautiful materials, dip-died, sculptural knitwear, embroidered with immaculate white pearls. And then Matthias: sharp cuts, printed, woven materials in layers, heads captured in glass bowls: the utmost possible opposite. Yet apart from all these examples, both students also differ a lot in their mentality. Mariko’s project could go on forever and ever, as where Matthias ends in a sharp direct cut: no doubt about it. In all differences Mariko and Matthias are united in some sort of neo-retro, yet revitalizing romanticism.'

W.M.P. Ewals, principal lecturer BA Fashion Design about Lichting: “Lichting is the most prestigious platform in the Netherlands for new talent.”

Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam

Participants: Musa Shah and Ruby Verhoeven

'This year, we challenged our graduates to create new volumes by adjusting and mixing existing patterns.
Where Ruby created an elegant women’s collection by re-inventing elements of iconic garments, Musa’s men’s collection shows minimalistic erotic detailing in ethnic colours and design references with a modern all-over perspective.
Both collections present comfort as a new approach of classic luxury.'

Gerrit Jan Vos, course Director Fashion, The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam about Lichting: “The Lichting platform shows that diversity is our Dutch strength.”

Academy of Fine Art / Zuyd University, Maastricht

Participants: Ingo Binder and Karolina Nieslony

'Karolina Nieslony’s collection is based on two surprisingly simple ingredients: the Spanish architect Calatraya and the Polish traditional dresses she wore as a child. Nieslony created a romantic and feminine collection; airy and girlish with handcrafted lace and embroideries in Calatraya colours and shapes.
Ingo Binder’s THE PILGRIM collection reveals a modern perspective on a pilgrim – the romantic icon. Binder presents an image of a global traveller, perfectly executed in design as in colouring, materials and styling.'

Rita Suers, principal lecturer Fashion Design, Academy of Fine Art Maastricht/ Zuyd University about Lichting: “Lichting is an important platform for student talent. Also, students and academies get the opportunity to measure themselves with their competition.”

About Lichting

The concept of ‘Lichting’ is simple: the best academy graduates of one year in 1 central catwalk show.
